Why Bother Banning Sex Toys?

Reading over at Gun Toting Liberal about Alabama working on banning sex toys. Being in California it seems silly to do such a thing. They’re for private use in the home. I know the rant about protecting the public morality, but I don’t agree that banning sex toys would do such a thing.

Let’s face it. There are more important things in this world to worry about than sex toys. People use them. If they can’t buy them, they’ll find a substitute or order it online. It’s not something that causes people to run out and commit crimes. And as for public morality…

I don’t believe that enjoying your sexuality in private is criminal. That is in part what such a ban is targeting, after all. But if you aren’t hurting other people, where is the immorality?

I agree with the article that GTL was referencing, especially where it says:

Think about the things we do worry about in Huntsville today: gun violence, drug use, school taxes, BRAC, the war in Iraq, the price of gasoline, traffic, school buses, to name just a few. Is a sex toy shop anywhere on our radar? Have we seen even one headline in the last eight years saying, “Sex toy linked to crime spree”?

Just think about it. Can you disagree? Please tell me, where exactly is the harm, because apparently I just don’t get it.

Now I don’t want sex toys so freely available that children see them everywhere and all that stuff. I’m not insane (I think). Have limits on where they can be sold, sure. But say that freely consenting adults cannot buy them and/or choose to use them? Not a chance.
