Were the US Attorney Firings Politically Motivated?
There’s been quite a fuss about the firing of eight US Attorneys. People are screaming that they were politically motivated, unjustified and so forth.
I must admit the firings came at an unusual time. It’s common practice for an incoming President to fire existing US Attorneys. Nothing wrong with that at all, even though it’s obviously politically motivated.
But I must say that these firings are highly suspicious. George Bush has been President for a long time now. I would like there to be a solid reason for firing this late in the game. Otherwise it leaves things open for all kinds of interpretations.
I am absolutely opposed to the idea of closed door, unrecorded testimony with no oaths. At the very least there needs to be a public record. I would like to think that honest testimony would be given with or without an oath but… we are talking about politicians, after all. Even under oath you can expect the truth to be manipulated.
That said, I grant President Bush that he does have the right to fire as he pleases. As I understand it, US Attorneys do serve at the pleasure of the President. But I also grant all citizens to look at this and say there’s something odd about it. That’s what happens when you do something perfectly permissible at a highly unusual time. People look and wonder.
And I’d worry if they didn’t. Love the controversy or hate it, it’s better than apathy.
