Should There Be a Withdrawl Timeline?
President Bush has made it clear that he does not want a timeline for withdrawl drawn up. I don’t agree with him on a lot of things. But I do agree that now is not the time to say when we’re leaving Iraq.
For me, it boils down to one very simple point. If we leave too quickly and the country dissolves into chaos, we’ve done something incredibly unfair to the people of Iraq. We’ve probably also made more enemies.
Yes, you can argue that we’re gaining enemies by staying too. I won’t argue that point because it’s true enough. It’s a nasty situation with no easy way out.
I have very strong reasons to want the best for our troops out there. One of my brothers-in-law is going to be stationed inside the Green Zone in Baghdad in a few months. It’s hard thinking of him going into that kind of situation, especially since previously he had been told he absolutely wouldn’t be going (retiring in about 2 years). But it is his duty.
Saying we’re going to withdraw does have the potential of giving the various factions a time to plan for so that they can try and take over once we’re gone. So what happens then? Do we go back and clean up again, giving the appearance of breaking our word? Ignore it and look like we don’t care? I can’t think of a pretty solution.
Being honest here, I can say I think we got invaded Iraq for the wrong reasons. I don’t like how things have gone. But I also don’t feel that dropping out too quickly will do anyone any good at all.
