Should an Ultrasound Viewing be Required for an Abortion?
I have absolutely no problem with the idea that abortions are too common in this country. I think of it as a problem. But I am pro-choice and firmly oppose making abortion illegal.
So this makes me pause and think when I read that Georgia is considering requiring women to have the chance to view an ultrasound image, if one is taken, of their baby before having an abortion. The measure has passed the House there.
Overall, I think I like the idea. I would have to see the implementation to be sure, but so long as this is optional it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea at all.
Yes, I am much worried about how this will actually work, which is why I can’t give it my full approval. So far what I’m reading about it sounds great.
I do agree that women need better access to birth control as well as better education on these topics. I personally could not have an abortion short of an extreme circumstance. I came close to miscarrying my son late term, so I truly cannot imagine killing a baby in my body deliberately. But I also don’t feel that I have the right to demand that of all women.
But I do not share the fear of some that this will push people into back alley abortions. It still sounds voluntary to me, and adding a step to encourage a little thought is not likely to be a disaster, so long as there is no pressure.
With this kind of a measure in place, I would expect that a woman planning to have an abortion and utterly set on it would probably simply refuse the ultrasound and/or to view it. It doesn’t seem that there is anything preventing that.
Am I worried that this is chipping away at our right to have an abortion? Honestly, no. If I understand these things correctly it shouldn’t cause that much trouble. It should be very interesting to see this kind of a law implemented, just to see how things would really go.
