More Texas Excess
Have the politicians in Texas gone crazy or something? I posted the other day about the governor signing an executive order about Gardasil, but it turns out he’s not the only Texas politician who wants to overcontrol what parents do. I missed the story about another one who wants to make parents missing teacher conferences a misdemeanor.
Yes, parents do need to be involved in their children’s education. No, making it a misdemeanor with a $500 fine is not going to create wonderful, supportive parents who care about their child’s education.
I’m glad that at least this one shows slim odds of becoming law.
Yes, there are negligent parents out there who choose to skip these conferences for little or no reason. Making it a criminal offense is not going to change them. It’s just going to mean more and more excuses from them. You cannot mandate good parenting.
Good parenting comes from knowing how to be a good parent and truly caring for your children. All parents are going to make mistakes, and even the best intentioned ones can sometimes do something dumb like forget a scheduled conference with a teacher. That is not worth a fine plus a criminal charge.
