Are Children the Purpose of Marriage?

Some would say yes. It’s one of the core arguements used against same sex marriage. So now a gay advocacy group is proposing that marriages that do not produce children within three years should be annulled.

I have to give them credit for trying. It’s at least amusing.

In case you’re wondering, I have no problem with gay marriage. For me, marriage is about dedication between two people to live their lives together. But then I also have no problem with the idea of legalizing civil unions between people who want a legal bond similar to marriage. It comes down to how important you think the name is. Marriage, civil union, domestic partnership… if you get the same rights and obligations how much does the name really matter?
Of course, this is an obvious ploy to get publicity. Who knows if it will even get on the ballot, although I will laugh if it does. I do like seeing some of the premises of not allowing gay marriage challenged.

One of my sisters once suggested that the State has no place in marriage anyhow. Suppose marriage was limited to churches, and anyone could go to the State for a civil union? Then, just as now, you would need to go to the State to inform them of your marriage, but in their eyes it would be a civil union. In one sense marriage could be considered religious, and thus no business of the State’s.

In many ways just come down to “who would be hurt by allowing gay marriage?” God, according to some people. I guess he’s pretty easily angered. I’m not quite certain how allowing gay marriage would destroy opposite sex marriage, although that seems to be the fear.

For those who are wondering, I love seeing groups get attention to their cause creatively, even when I don’t necessarily agree. It’s just fun watching the world go by.
